Picture a nine-year-old girl in a small village in Punjab or Sindh. She wakes up before sunrise, fetches water, helps her mother with the younger children, and by the time her brothers are getting ready for school, she is already on her way to fetch fodder for the family’s livestock. School was never really an option for her — not because she didn’t want to go, but because no one around her ever imagined it as a possibility. Her story is not rare. It is the everyday reality for a huge number of children in Pakistan.

The numbers tell a story of real progress, but also real distance still to cover. According to Pakistan’s own government survey data, roughly 28% of school-age children — around 20 million kids — remain out of school nationally, a figure that has dropped significantly from 38% just a couple of years ago. That improvement matters, but it hides a harder truth underneath: the gap between boys and girls is still wide. Out-of-school girls remain far more likely to be missing from classrooms than boys, and the gap widens even further in provinces like Balochistan, where nearly half of school-age children are still not enrolled. Even where enrollment numbers look encouraging, a second and quieter crisis is unfolding — many children who are technically “in school” are not actually learning to read, write, or do basic math at grade level, because classrooms are overcrowded, teachers are under-resourced, and government education spending has been falling for years instead of rising.

Behind every one of these numbers is a child whose future narrows a little more with each passing year outside a classroom. A child who never learns to read struggles to understand a medicine label, a job contract, or a text message from a bank. A girl who is pulled out of school early is far more likely to be married as a child, to have children of her own before she is ready, and to have little say in decisions that shape her life. Education isn’t just about literacy — it is the single biggest predictor of whether a child grows up with choices or without them.

This is exactly where the BHM Foundation focuses its energy. Our approach to education starts with removing the everyday barriers that keep children — especially girls — out of the classroom in the first place. That means helping cover the cost of school fees, uniforms, and books for families who simply cannot afford them; working with local communities to change the mindset that a girl’s place is only at home; and creating safe, welcoming learning spaces where children who have never held a pencil before can start to catch up without feeling embarrassed or left behind. We also work closely with parents, because real, lasting change happens when families themselves start to believe that sending their daughter to school is worth it.

We don’t see education as charity — we see it as an investment with a multiplying effect. Every child who stays in school is a future nurse, teacher, engineer, or entrepreneur who will go on to lift up their own family and community. Every girl who finishes school instead of getting married at fourteen is a future mother who will, in turn, insist that her own children go to school. This is how generational poverty is actually broken — not through one-time relief, but through steady, patient investment in a child’s ability to learn.

There is still a long road ahead. Pakistan needs stronger government investment in education, better-trained teachers, and safer schools — especially for girls in rural and conservative areas. But real change also happens community by community, child by child, and that is the work BHM Foundation is committed to every single day.
